Blazers Finish Fourth at Belmont Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The UAB cross country team began its 2007 season Friday with senior Elizabeth Ambrus leading the Blazers to a fourth place finish at the Belmont Opener.
UAB placed five runners in the top 25 and had several strong performances from a number of returning runners and newcomers.
Ambrus took home individual runner-up honors for the second straight year on the 4,000-meter course, which she completed in 14:10.88. Sarah Bowman from Tennessee won the meet individual title.
Stephanie Gammon had a promising start to her career, crossing the line in 13th place in a time of 15:02.49. Whitney Mays (15:06.14) posted her best time and 15th place finish. Newcomer Lacey Wright (15:18.40) placed 20th, while Kristina Olsen (15:23.39) placed 25th to round out the scoring.
Tennessee (53) claimed the team title with three runners finishing in the top five. UAB entered the race defending champions. Vanderbilt finished second with 58 points, and the host school Belmont and UAB finished with 75.
Other runners who competed for UAB but were not included in the scoring were Christina Chambers (17:10.62, 63rd), Katie Horton (17:23.38, 68th) and Tracy Rowan (18:15.36).
