Volleyball Ends Perfect Weekend With Two Wins Saturday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The UAB volleyball team earned a pair of shutout victories at the U of Memphis Invitational on Saturday, beating Louisiana-Lafayette, 3-0 (30-22, 30-13, 30-18) and Stetson, 3-0 (30-19, 30-21, 30-13). The Blazers are now 8-5 on the year after winning all three of their matches at the event.
Following her teams second win of the day, UAB head coach Kerry Messersmith said she was pleased with the continued improvement of her team.
"Lilly continued to improve today and I thought our hitters were much improved," she said. "If we can continue to improve like we did this weekend then I think we're going to be fine. These last three wins have done a lot for our confidence as we get back into Conference USA play next weekend."
In the Blazers' first match of the day against Louisiana-Lafayette, junior outside hitter Ivana Bozic finished with 18 kills on .516 hitting, while also making 13 digs and serving three aces.
Junior middle blocker Casey Dent hit .526 in the match and finished with 12 kills, six service aces and two total blocks. Senior Fernanda Domingos had a team-high four blocks and seven kills against the Ragin' Cajuns.
Junior setter Lilly Domingos had 42 assists in helping the Blazers hit .350 for the match.
Amie Goodwin led Louisiana-Lafayette with eight kills and six digs.
Against Stetson, Bozic again was outstanding, going for 16 kills and a career-high 23 digs. She hit .577 against the Hatters.
Senior middle blocker Angie Ping came off the bench to put up solid numbers against Stetson. Ping finished with a career-best 14 kills.
L. Domingos continued to improve at setter, posting 41 assists and seven digs.
Galvin posted 19 digs to help her move closer to climbing up to fourth on the school's all-time career digs list.
Stetson, who falls to 5-8 with the loss, was led by Gina Iacona and her seven kills.
The Blazers will be back in action when they resume Conference USA play at Tulane on Friday at 7 p.m.
