BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Junior soccer player Wes Johnson has been chosen as the UAB Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
Johnson is heavily involved in campus activities, including serving as president of UAB's Student Athletic Advisory Committee. The goalkeeper has also achieved high marks in the classroom, earning recognition three times on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
On the field, Johnson has started 34 games in net over his Blazer career, including 10 games so far in 2008. He owns a 1.10 goals-against average this season, having allowed just 11 goals in nearly 900 minutes of action. The junior has tallied 35 saves on the year, and he picked up his seventh career shutout earlier this season in UAB's C-USA opener against Memphis.
Johnson is the second men's soccer player to receive the scholar-athlete honor this fall, joining teammate Dean Sorrell, who was recognized with the award three weeks ago.
Johnson and the Blazers (4-9-2) return to action Saturday with a home game against SIU-Edwardsville. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. CT at West Campus Field.
