BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's soccer team will open the gates of West Campus Field to youth soccer players from around the city of Birmingham on Youth Night this Friday for its match against the Marshall Thundering Herd. Any youth soccer player who comes to the 7 p.m. contest wearing his or her team jersey will receive free admission to see Blazers in what is a crucial matchup against the Thundering Herd.
In addition to Friday night's contest being Youth Night, fans who bring a canned food item to the match will also receive free admission. Furthermore, UAB's seven seniors will be honored prior to the start of the contest.
"This is just one of the ways we want to back to the community," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "We are honoring our seniors and it is going to be a big, big game for us, so we are hoping for a good crowd. The city of Birmingham and the local soccer community has always supported us throughout the years and we wanted to give back as a way to thank them for their support."
The Blazers are in a must-win situation when they take on the Thundering Herd. If UAB should win the contest and FIU loses to SMU on Friday night, the Blazers will earn their 14th consecutive trip to the Conference USA Tournament, which is held in Dallas, Texas on Nov. 12-16.
The match is free to UAB students who have a valid student ID. Additionally, students and UAB men's soccer season ticket holders are encouraged to come and enjoy free food and drinks at a pregame tailgate that will begin 90 minutes before the game (5:30 p.m. CT).
