BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB baseball team split its doubleheader with Brown on Saturday at Young Memorial Field as the Bears won the first game of the day, 7-3, before the Blazers came back to win game two, 9-6. Senior Ryan Keedy combined for four hits, four runs scored and three RBI on the day to lead UAB.
The Blazers are now 4-4 on the season, while Brown is off to a 1-2 start on its opening weekend.
UAB trailed 5-2 heading into the sixth inning of game two before it started its comeback as three straight doubles by senior outfielder Phil Bell, Keedy and junior center fielder Cody McMurry sparked a four-run inning for UAB as it took a 6-5 lead.
"It was really good to come back and win this one," said McMurry, who finished the day with three doubles. "Bell started us off with a double and then Keedy hit a double and then me right behind him so those three doubles were really big for us."
UAB added three insurance runs in the eighth thanks to back-to-back doubles to the gaps by sophomore third baseman Luke Stewart and junior right fielder Austin Taylor.
Junior right-hander Kyle Roberson pitched the final 2.2 innings for the Blazers, striking out three and allowing just one run.
Senior righty Brandon Wallace earned his first win of the season on the mound after pitching 6.1 innings in which he allowed just three earned runs to record his second consecutive quality start.
Will Weidig got the loss for Brown in game two after giving up the four run sixth inning. Weidig ended his day with 7.0 innings pitched, six earned runs allowed and six strikeouts.
Designated hitter Conor Reardon led Brown offensively in game two by going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.
UAB led early in game one of the twin bill after Keedy connected for his first home run of the season for a two-run shot that put the Blazers out front 2-1 in the first.
Brown starter Alex Silverman settled in from there and didn't allow another Blazer run until the seventh inning, ending his first outing of the season with 7.0 innings pitched, seven strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed in earning the win.
The Bears were able to pull ahead of the Blazers in the third inning by getting two runs home on one hit and one error.
A two-run single up the middle by Brown right fielder Nick Punal in the fourth helped chalk up three more runs for the Bears to help them pull away for the 7-3 victory.
Senior right-hander Rodney Wodson was tabbed with the loss on the mound in game one after he threw 2.2 innings and allowed three runs in his first career start as a Blazer.
