Blazer Offense Shut Down In 6-1 Loss At UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. - UAB was held to four hits in a 6-1 loss at UCF Saturday night in game two of its three-game series at Jay Bergman Field. After the Knights scored all six runs in the first four innings, James Oliver came on in relief and shut down UCF, allowing no runs and striking out three in the final five innings, but the Blazers were able to plate just one run in the defeat.
UCF improves to 31-21 (8-15 C-USA) with the win, while UAB falls to 20-31 (4-16 C-USA) with the loss.
UCF got a stellar start on the mound from Mitch Herold (4-3) who struck out seven, gave up two hits and didn't allow a run in seven innings pitched.
Beau Pender (0-2) got the loss after allowing six runs in three innings, while striking out three in three innings.
Left fielder Austin Taylor had two of UAB's four hits in the game and scored the team's lone run, while second baseman Nick Crawford and right fielder Brint Hardy each recorded one hit.
Catcher Robert Lara led the Knights by going 2-for-3 with three RBI in the game, in addition, left fielder Colin Arnold, center fielder Tyson Auer and second baseman Dwayne Bailey all had two hits in the winning effort.
UCF got out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Lara laced a two-run single to center field and then in the second, the Knights extended their lead to 3-0 on an RBI-single to right field by Auer.
The Blazers went on to walk in a UCF run in the third and then a sacrifice fly by third baseman Shane Brown and an RBI-single by Lara added two more runs in the fourth to give the Knights a 6-0 lead.
UAB got on the board in the top of the eighth when Taylor doubled to left-center to lead off the inning and then scored on a balk by UCF reliever Evan Stobbs to make it 6-1.
The two teams will play the final game of the three-game series at Jay Bergman Field on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT.
