GREENSBORO, N.C. - UAB golfer Zack Sucher continued his impressive play this summer, as the Mobile, Ala. native shot 68 Sunday to successfully defend his title at the Cardinal Amateur. Sucher closed the 54-hole event as the only player under par after shooting a 2-under 208 at Cardinal Golf and Country Club.
Sucher finished ahead of Reed Darsie (73), Dustin Groves (70) and Nicolas Geyger (69), who closed play tied for second at one-over par 211. The victory moved Sucher up No. 10 in the Golfweek/Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking.
Sucher is one of several men's golfers who have played impressively over the summer months heading into the 2008-09 campaign. Last week, Mike Oimoen claimed the Iowa Amateur Championship for a second consecutive year.
Other Blazer standouts this summer include Cathal O'Malley, who landed a spot representing his home country of Ireland in the Home International Championship, which is played in Glasgow, Scotland on Sept. 3-5. Additionally, Jason Shufflebotham was tabbed a first alternate for his home country of Wales in the same event. Meanwhile, Blake West made it to the quarterfinals of the Alabama State Amateur Match Play championship.
Prior to capturing the Cardinal Amateur, Sucher led USA to a 37-23 win over Japan in the Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship at Tokyo Golf Club this past July. Sucher went 1-0-2 during the three-day event.
