BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Dean Sorrell, a junior member of the men's soccer team, has been named the UAB Scholar-Athlete of the Week. In addition to his academic success, the defender has been a constant for the Blazers on the field.
Sorrell has started all 48 games for UAB since entering the lineup as a redshirt freshman in 2006. He is the only Blazer to have played every minute of every game this season.
As one of the top defenders in Conference USA, Sorrell often draws the task of defending the opponent's top offensive player. In 2008, he has anchored a Blazer defensive unit that has allowed just 1.05 goals per game.
Sorrell has been a leader in the classroom, as well. The Oak Mountain High School product has earned a spot on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of the past three seasons.
The UAB men's soccer team returns to action Saturday at 7 p.m. CT when the Blazers host 15th-ranked Tulsa at West Campus Field.
