BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB volleyball team spent this past Saturday morning volunteering at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in downtown Birmingham.
Despite rainy weather, the event drew 14,000 participants to Linn Park for a 5K race and a one-mile "fun run and walk," which raised money for the fight against breast cancer.
Members of the UAB volleyball team volunteered for three hours as they helped to organize runners and walkers at the event.
"We were glad to be able to help out Saturday for such a great cause," UAB head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "Breast cancer has affected so many women and families, and the Susan G. Komen organization is a tremendous leader in the fight against it. Our girls were excited to share in such a wonderful event."
Susan G. Komen for the Cure is one of the world's foremost organizations in raising money to find cures for breast cancer and care for those living with the disease. Saturday's race raised approximately $900,000.
The UAB volleyball team is back in action this weekend with a pair of Conference USA road matches. The Blazers will play Friday night at SMU and Sunday afternoon at Tulsa.
UAB's next home match, Oct. 30 versus UCF, has been designated as the Blazers' Dig for the Cure match as UAB hosts the "Scare Away Cancer" fall festival to benefit Susan G. Komen of North Central Alabama. The night will feature face painting, pumpkin decorating, cakewalks and more in conjunction with the UAB-UCF volleyball match.
