BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- This Friday, in conjunction with the volleyball match between UAB and UCF, the Blazer volleyball program will host the Scare Away Cancer fall festival to benefit Susan G. Komen of North Central Alabama.
The fall festival is scheduled to begin Friday at 6 p.m. on the concourse of Bartow Arena with first serve in the UAB-UCF match slated for 7 p.m. Fans who print out and present the flyer linked above will receive free admission.
UAB Athletics along with local churches and student organizations will set up their favorite fall activities for the entire family. There will be face painting, pumpkin decorating and much more, in addition to the Conference USA volleyball showdown between the Blazers and Knights. The first 400 fans in attendance will receive a free t-shirt.
Volleyball has long been a supporter of breast cancer awareness through a campaign called Dig for the Cure, which is associated with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Each year, collegiate volleyball teams around the nation participate in Dig for the Cure by hosting their own breast cancer awareness matches. This year, the UAB-UCF contest is designated as the Blazers' Dig for the Cure match.
The UAB volleyball team has been collecting donations and pledges throughout the month of October to benefit Susan G. Komen of North Central Alabama. Fans will also be able to pledge a certain amount of money per dig at Friday's match.
Susan G. Komen will also host a pre-match dinner at Bartow Arena to thank the volunteers who worked the organization's recent Race for the Cure, which drew 14,000 participants to Linn Park in Birmingham. The UAB volleyball team volunteered at the event, which raised approximately $900,000. Susan G. Komen of North Central Alabama and UAB Athletics are inviting each volunteer to attend the 2009 Scare Away Cancer event and pre-match dinner.
Friday's volleyball match is the first of four remaning home contests for UAB, which has spent the past two weekends on the road. The Blazers enter the match at 12-13 (5-5 C-USA), while UCF comes in at 11-13 (3-8 C-USA).
