BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB men's golfers Kaylor Timmons and Zack Sucher each recorded a top-10 finish to lead the men's golf team to a sixth-place result at the John Hayt Intercollegiate. Behind the strong play of the senior duo, the Blazers closed play with a team score of 905 (298-305-301) and defeated six ranked teams in the 15-team field.
UAB was one of just two teams not ranked in the top 50 to finish among the top six teams in the three-day, 54-hole event (Georgia Southern placed third overall). The Blazers bettered the likes of No. 3 Alabama (seventh), No. 15 TCU (eighth), No. 20 UT-Chattanooga (T13th), No. 23 Duke (15th) and No. 44 Tulsa (12th).
LSU, ranked No. 30 in the nation, won the event by eight strokes with an 885, while 10th-ranked Arizona State was second with an 893. Following Georgia Southern (895) was No. 48 Georgia State (900) and No. 14 Tennesee (901) to round out the top five.
"I am proud of our team's effort in some tough playing conditions all week," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "Our guys gutted it out and beat some very good teams in gusty winds and cool temperatures. This finish is something that can give us a lot of confidence as we go through the rest of the season."
Timmons continued his hot start to the 2009 spring season. After leading the Blazers in the first tournament of the spring campaign last weekend, the Fort Payne, Ala. native carded a 71, which was one of the top rounds of the day, to vault into a seventh-place tie with a tournament total of four-over par 220 (73-77-71).
Sucher also played well on the par 72, 6,955-yard Sawgrass Country Club course, finishing tied for ninth overall with a five-over par 221 (72-74-75). The ninth-place finish marked Sucher's 13th top-10 finish of his career and third of the 2008-09 campaign.
Junior Cathal O'Malley finished tied for 48th with a 16-over par 232 (78-79-75), while sophomore Jason Shufflebotham (79-78-80) and junior Adam West (74-82-81) rounded out UAB, both shooting a 237 during the tournament.
The Blazers will next be in action on March 6-8 at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla.
