BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team finished its 2009 home slate perfect Sunday with a 5-2 victory over visiting Murray State.
Evelien Strijker and Paula Alvarez were dominating at the top two singles positions, losing just five total games combined in their matches. Strijker defeated Cassidy Cunitz 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1, while Alvarez took down Anne Pennington 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.
The Blazers also picked up singles wins at the fifth and sixth singles positions, where Jenny Cape and Ceylan Engin won in straight sets. Giorgia Romeo and Brittany DeFelice suffered straight-set losses for the Blazers at No. 4 and No. 5.
UAB managed to win the doubles point on the strength of an 8-4 win from the No. 1 team of Alvarez and Stijker and and an 8-5 victory by the No. 2 duo of DeFelice and Romeo. Murray State's lone doubles win came at the No. 3 position where Lynsey Bochenek and Katelyn Fulcher won 8-2 over Cape and Engin.
With the team win, UAB evens its record at 5-5 on the season and wraps up the home portion of its schedule undefeated at 4-0. The Blazers played three matches on campus this season and also won the only match they played at Brook Highland Racquet Club. Three additional home matches were wiped out by weather.
UAB handed Murray State just its third loss of the spring Sunday as the Racers dropped their record to 6-3.
The Blazers have seven regular-season contests remaining with each of them away from Birmingham. The first match of that road stretch comes Friday when the UAB returns to action with a trip to Arkansas State.
