BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Alabama quickly scored four runs Monday against UAB when the teams' halted baseball game resumed at Young Memorial Field, and the Crimson Tide held on to defeat the Blazers 10-6.
The game resumed in the top of the sixth inning with UAB in a tough spot -- a bases-loaded jam with one out and the score tied 2-2. Alabama's Tyler Odle was the first batter to face UAB's Blake Huddleston, who hit Odle with a pitch to plate the go-ahead run.
Taylor Dugas followed with a double for Alabama that landed on the right field foul line just beyond first base and scored two more runners. Josh Rutledge then brought a fourth run home with an RBI groundout to put Alabama ahead 6-2.
"We knew the first couple batters today were going to be a real key because of the position we were in," UAB head coach Brian Shoop said. "Unfortunately, we hit the first batter. On the second one, Blake made a great pitch, but the ball landed right on the foul line, and all of a sudden we're down three runs."
The teams played even the rest of the way with UAB scoring a run in the seventh on a Brint Hardy RBI single and three more in the eighth, highlighted by a Jamal Austin RBI triple.
Alabama also scored three in the eighth inning, including an RBI double from Rutledge and a run-scoring single from Ross Wilson. The Crimson Tide then tacked on one more run in the ninth.
The starters were the pitchers of record for both teams in a game that started back on March 25 at Regions Park. Casey Kebodeaux earned the win for Alabama after giving up two runs in five innings. Beau Pender took the loss for UAB, surrendering three runs -- but just one earned -- in 5.1 innings. Neither player pitched Monday.
The original game was stopped March 25 because of heavy rains with the score tied. The teams agreed to resume it as a halted game.
Five players finished with multiple hits in the game for UAB, including Jonathan Merritt, who tallied two hits and a pair of RBI. Dugas led Alabama with two hits and two RBI.
UAB falls to 18-16 with the loss, while Alabama improves to 23-12. UAB will be back in action Tuesday at Young Memorial Field with a doubleheader against Alabama A&M. Game one is slated to get underway at 3 p.m. (CT).
