BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Senior midfielder Kevin Sawchak has been tabbed the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. It is the first weekly award for a UAB player this season and it also marks the first league recognition for Sawchak in his career.
"This is a deserving award for Kevin," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "He played an outstanding game against a talented UCF team. He has worked tremendously hard throughout the entire season and I am glad to see his hard work has been noticed by the league office."
Sawchak recorded his first career multi-goal game to help lift UAB to a 2-1 road victory at 18th-ranked and league-leading UCF last Friday night. The Atlanta, Ga. native got the Blazers started on a good note when he recorded the fastest goal this season for the Green and Gold, connecting on a rebound just 2:11 into the contest to give UAB an early lead. Sawchak wasn't done there as he hit the game-winning goal at the 52:15 mark, less than six minutes after UCF had tied the game.
The loss to UAB not only snapped the Knights' nine-game unbeaten streak, but also marked UCF's (10-3-2, 4-1-2 C-USA) its first league loss of the season, as well as the Knight's first home defeat in 2010.
Sawchak's performance was just the second time this season that a conference player has posted multiple goals in a league match.
This season, Sawchak has posted three goals and three assists and ranks third on the team with nine points.
The Blazers will return to the pitch when they host the Marshall Thundering Herd on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field. Sawchak is one of five seniors who will be honored prior to the start of the contest. Wednesday night's match will also mark Alumni Night as the program welcomes back former players.
Admission is free to all UAB students with a valid ID. Students and season ticket holders are encouraged to attend a pregame tailgate with free food and drinks beginning approximately 90 minutes prior to the start of the match.
