HOOVER, Ala. -- Six Blazers ran personal-record times Saturday as the UAB cross country team ran to a sixth-place finish out of 25 teams at the NCAA South Regional hosted by Samford at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala.
Florida State, which is currently ranked No. 2 in the country, claimed the team title of the 6K race with a score of 24 points. Florida placed second with 67 points and Vanderbilt landed a third-place finish with 102 points. UAB claimed sixth with 206 points.
Georgia's Kristie Krueger captured the race's individual title with a 6K time of 19:52.93. Florida State's Pasca Cheruiyot, Pilar McShine and Jessica Parry claimed the next three spots and Auburn's Hollie Knight rounded out the top five finishers. The meet's top 25 finishers received all-region accolades.
Blazer junior Rhiannon Johns topped her former personal-record 6K time by almost two minutes to cross the line in 20:42.22. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada product placed 20th to earn her all-region honors.
"Unfortunately we ran too fast too early," UAB head coach Blake Boldon said. "But they hung on and fought as hard as they could. The girls gave a really great effort and I can't say enough about these seven; they couldn't have run harder."
Junior Clara Cid crossed the line in a personal-record time of 21:03.27 to finish 34th. Senior Stephanie Gammon placed 41st with a personal-record time of 21:19.19.
Junior Kristina Vaughn was UAB's fourth finisher with a personal-record time of 21:39.31, while fellow junior Colleen Standridge ran to a time of 22:09.78.
Blazer senior Bianca Le'Blanc recorded a personal-record time of 22:36.61, and junior Lucy Taylor posted a personal-record time of 22:59.29.
"The tremendous UAB support went a long way with the girls," Boldon said. "We received support from the UAB administration, staff and other student-athletes. The excitement of today's race is something they'll remember."
Florida State and Florida will receive automatic bids to the NCAA D-1 Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 22. The top two teams from the nine regional meets receive automatic bids, and 13 bids will be at-large. After the teams have been determined, 38 additional individuals will be selected to compete at the NCAA Championships.
