BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB volleyball team picked up two individual honors Tuesday as Sam Serley was named second-team All-Conference USA and Ally Slaughter was selected to the league's All-Freshman Team.
The conference office released its all-conference and specialty awards as selected by a vote of the league's 12 head coaches.
Serley, a middle blocker, ranks fifth in C-USA with a 1.05 blocks-per-set average and eighth in the league with a .324 attack percentage. The Nashville, Tenn., product has reached double-digit kills 16 times this season and posted at least five blocks in 12 matches.
Serley managed a career-high 23 kills Sept. 11 against Arkansas and had 19 kills Oct. 24 at UTEP. Her .630 attack percentage (19-2-27) against the Miners is the highest by any player in the conference this year with at least 25 attempts in a match. She has also posted a season-high eight blocks three times, all in conference play.
Slaughter, an outside hitter, is averaging 2.18 kills per set in her rookie campaign and has really come on over the past month and a half.
The Pelham, Ala., product has recorded seven double-figure kill performances, all in the past 12 matches, and is averaging 2.69 kills per frame over that stretch. Her increase in productivity has coincided with improved team play for UAB, which is 7-5 in its past 12 contests. A capable all-around player, she also averages 1.38 digs per set.
Slaughter's selection marks the second straight year the Blazers have placed someone on the All-Freshman Team after Serley earned the honor in 2009.
C-USA regular season champion Tulsa led all teams with six all-conference selections, including Conference Player of the Year Tyler Henderson. The Golden Hurricane also had the league's Setter of the Year in Jordan Clampitt and Coach of the Year in Ed Allen. Rice's Tracey Lam was the Libero of the Year, while Tulane's Cori Martone was the Freshman of the Year.
