BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB volleyball team closes out its home schedule Wednesday with a 7 p.m. CT match against rival Memphis at Bartow Arena.
It is the first of two matches this week between the Blazers and Tigers as the teams will also meet Saturday at 7 p.m. CT in Memphis for the season finale.
UAB (11-19, 8-10 C-USA) is riding a three-match winning streak and has won six of its past nine contests. The Blazers picked up a pair of 3-1 home victories last weekend over UTEP and UCF.
Blazer libero Heather Thomas enters the season's final week needing just 20 digs to break the UAB single-season record of 592, set by Brianna Galvin in 2006. Thomas ranks in the top 30 nationally with a 5.16 digs-per-set average.
The Blazers are led by Sam Serley, announced as a second-team all-conference selection this week, who paces the team in attack percentage (.324) and blocks per set (1.05). UAB's Ally Slaughter was also recognized this week on the C-USA All-Freshman Team.
Memphis (16-14, 7-11 C-USA) also played UCF and UTEP last weekend, falling 3-1 to the Knights and then rebounding for a 3-0 sweep of the Miners. The Tigers are led by first-team all-conference selection Altrese Hawkins, who averages 3.96 kills per set with a .313 attack percentage.
UAB has won the past three matches with Memphis dating back to the 2008 season, including both meetings last year.
