BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- On the heels of a career-best blocking performance over the weekend against Rice, UAB volleyball player Michelle Uzoh was named Monday as the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week.
Uzoh posted her first career double-double with 10 blocks to go along with 12 kills Saturday as UAB earned a five-set win over the Owls for the second time this season. The 10 blocks tied for the second-most by an individual player in C-USA this season as she helped the Blazers to 18 total blocks, tying for the highest team mark in the league in 2010.
Uzoh finished the weekend with a 1.62 blocks-per-set average over UAB's league contests with Houston and Rice, and she was also a key contributor on the offensive end. The senior middle blocker from San Antonio, Texas, posted 17 combined kills and hit for a team-best .326 attack percentage in the two matches.
The 2009 C-USA blocks-per-set leader, Uzoh currently ranks second among the Blazers with a 0.95 blocks-per-frame average this year. Her .301 attack percentage also ranks second on the team and 13th in the league.
Uzoh and the Blazers (8-18, 5-9 C-USA) split two matches for the fourth straight weekend and have now won four of their past eight contests after starting the conference season 1-5.
The Blazers will continue a four-match road swing this week, traveling to Southern Miss for a 7 p.m. match on Friday and Tulane for a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
