UAB Men's Tennis Team Defeats Memphis, 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team came back after losing the doubles point to win 5-of-6 singles matches as the Blazers claimed a 5-2 victory over Conference USA foe Memphis on Wednesday at the Lakeshore Tennis Center.
UAB improved its record in dual matches to 10-6 for the season and 1-0 in conference matches. The Tigers fell to 7-9 overall and 0-3 in league play.
All five of the Blazers' wins in singles were decided in straight sets. Senior Alex Emery was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Memphis' Jordan Smith at No. 1 singles while Danny Manlow took a 7-5, 6-2 decision at No. 2 over Charlie Ramsay.
The Tigers captured their only singles win at the No. 3 position as David Henry outlasted UAB freshman David Zimmerman, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The Blazers swept singles play at the bottom of the lineup with wins by Daniel Moser at No. 4, Tyrone Ewels at No. 5 and Dan Cornei at the No. 6 spot.
Moser downed Michael Janz, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 while Ewels notched a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles. Cornei capped off the singles play with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6.
UAB trailed 1-0 after the Tigers won at No. 1 and 2 doubles, both being decided by 8-5 scores. Henry and Smith beat UAB's duo of Emery and Thomas Petrich at No. 1 doubles while Janz and Taylor teamed to defeat the Blazers' tandem of Manlow and Zimmerman.
UAB picked up a win at No. 3 doubles as Ewels and Moser got past the Tiger team of Gaerthoeffner and Ramsay, 8-6.
The Blazers' next action will come April 1-3 when they travel to New Orleans for the Conference USA Shootout where they will play three C-USA opponents (East Carolina, Southern Miss and Tulane) in three days.
