CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --- Senior forward Anthony King scored a pair of goals to lead the UAB men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Tech on Sunday during the final day of the Virginia Classic. The Blazers, who dropped a 2-1 decision to tournament host and second-ranked Virginia on Friday, finished the weekend event at 1-1.
"I thought we played very well today," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "We were able to create a lot of chances. We played solid defensively throughout today's game. Overall, this was a good weekend for us. We played against two ACC teams and played well in both games. I think we showed we can compete on a national level."
King recorded his first multi-goal contest of his career by scoring both goals in a span of less than five minutes in the opening half. Both of his goals were unassisted.
The Huntsville, Ala. native struck for his first goal at the 20:15 mark when he took a shot from the outside, which hit the far post and bounced into the back of the net for a one-goal UAB lead.
Just under five minutes later, King would strike again, this time converting a penalty kick at the 25:07 mark to give the Blazers a commanding 2-0 lead.
The score would remain that way until the 70th minute when junior forward Babayele Sodade scored his second goal in as many games. The unassisted tally for Sodade gave the Blazers a three-goal cushion.
Virginia Tech (0-2) added a late goal in the 86th minute to result in the final score.
UAB goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski made three saves en route to his first win of the season.
The Blazers outshot the Hokies, 14-12, in the contest which included a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.
The Blazers will return to action when they host the 2010 UAB "Soccer For A Cure" Classic at West Campus Field on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11. UAB will play host for the four-team tournament featuring Memphis, Charlotte and North Florida.
In the tournament's opening round on Friday, Memphis will square off against North Florida at 5 pm, followed by UAB against Charlotte at 7:30 pm CT. On Saturday, the Tigers and 49ers will do battle at 5 pm, following by the Blazers against the Ospreys at 7:30 pm.
"I am looking forwad to playing our first regular-season home game this weekend," Getman said. "We get a chance to play against another ranked opponent on Friday night when we play Charlotte. This weekend gives us a chance to show our fans what UAB soccer is all about."
Students with a valid ID will receive free food and drinks beginning 60 minutes prior to kickoff of both UAB contests.
