BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB football team spent roughly two hours in shells and shorts beginning preparations for Saturday's contest at Florida Atlantic. The game will serve as the last time the Blazers will take the field in 2011.
Game time is slated for 4 p.m. ET (3 p.m. CT), with the Blazer IMG Sports Network radio broadcast airing on WUHT 107.7 FM in Birmingham. David Crane (play-by-play) and John Whitcomb (color) will have the call.
UAB (3-8, 3-5 C-USA) looks to capture its third-straight victory of the season, after earning come-from-behind wins against Memphis and then-No. 20 Southern Miss in back-to-back games.
Head coach Neil Callaway was pleased with his team's efforts at practice as the Blazers look to even the all-time series, which the Owls lead 2-1.
"It was a good day of practice," Callaway said. "Today we started working on Florida Atlantic. We went on Sunday a little bit, but today was the first day trying to implement what they do scheme wise and personnel wise."
FAU (0-10, 0-7 Sun Belt) is led by Howard Schnellenberger. The legendary head coach is in his 27th and final season on the sidelines.
"Howard has done a great job over the years, particularly offensively running their pro-style offense, which mirrors what teams do in the NFL," Callaway said.
Callaway also noted that the FAU offense has a strong passing game and some quick players on the defensive side of the ball.
"I think their strengths offensively are they have strong receivers and a good quarterback. Defensively they have a lot of team speed and are very physical," Callaway said.
Leading the Owls' defense has been linebackers David Hines and Randell Johnson. The duo has combined for 165 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss, five sacks and three forced fumbles.
