BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB senior goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski has been named a Third-Team Scholar All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), it was announced on Tuesday. With the nod, Woszczynski earns the third such honor in program history and the first since 2000.
"I am very pleased that coaches from around the country have recognized Carl's talent," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "He is a great athlete, student and leader who was a big reason for our success this past season. We are proud to call him a Blazer."
Woszczynski had a terrific senior season in the net for the Blazers, helping lead the team to a 13-5-3 overall record and Conference USA regular season title, their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2006 and a final ranking of No. 21 in the nation.
Individually, Woszczynski collected a school-record four Defensive Player of the Week honors from the league office. He led all Conference USA goalkeepers in shutouts (7) and saves (91) during the year. He also ranked second in the league in goals against average (0.86), save percentage (.812) and saves per game (4.33).
The Columbus, Ind. native also performed well in the classroom, twice named to the C-USA All-Academic team and he was one of 30 candidates for the Lowes Senior CLASS Award in 2011.
Woszczynski closed his career among the school's record holders. The three-time all-conference and two-time all-region honoree finished his career in second in UAB lore in goals against average (1.00) and shutouts (18), third in wins (35) and fourth in total saves (244).
Only two other UAB men's soccer student-athletes earned the distinction from the NSCAA. Lane Knight was the last to do it in 2000, while Loukas Papaconstantinou garnered the honor in 1996.
