DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The UAB women’s golf team fired a 337 in the second round of the LPGA Xavier Invitational at the LPGA International Golf Course on Saturday, bringing the Blazers’ tournament total through two rounds to 666 as the squad now sits in 11th place entering Sunday’s final round.
Junior Caitlin Watts turned in the low card of the day for UAB, carding a 7-over 79 on the par-72, 6,178-yard course. Watts, who was in 37th after day one, was one of just two Blazers to improve their place after round two as she is now tied for 28th in the field at 17-over par 161.
“The rough around the greens today made the course really tough,” head coach Kim Wilcox said. “The wind was blowing pretty steady all day as well so that was a challenge. We just look forward to getting back out tomorrow and playing better than we did today.”
Sophomore Margaret Yeh completed a 12-over round for an 84 on the card and is now tied for 39th overall at 20-over. Senior Lindsey Gipson and sophomore Holly Robinson rounded out the scoring for the Blazers, completing 16-over rounds of 88. Gipson sits in a tie for 53rd at 26-over par while Robinson is tied for 61st at 29-over par.
Also improving on her place through two rounds, freshman Jessica Rouillard is in 66th after shooting an 14-over 86, moving her up three spots from Friday’s action. She is 34-over par for the tournament.
As a team, the Blazers held steady in the 11th-place position with a score 666 through the first two rounds of play, totaling a 329 on Friday before shooting a 337 on Saturday. Florida Gulf Coast leads the field with a total score of 618 after firing a tournament-low 308 Saturday. Old Dominion also shot a 308 to move up the leaderboard on Saturday in second place with a 620, while Mercer rounded out the top three teams with a 316 on Saturday and 628 total score.
UAB is still faring well in the par-5 scoring, averaging 5.50 strokes on each par-5 to rank seventh in the field. Robinson continues to lead that effort with the second-best average par-5 score in the field at 4.88, while she is 1-under par for the week on the par-5 holes.
The Blazers will return to the course for the final round on Sunday, and will be paired again with Louisiana-Monroe and South Dakota State. The tournament resumes with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. CT.
