Fairbanks, Serley Earn C-USA Weekly Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Rachel Fairbanks and Sam Serley were named Conference USA Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, for their contributions for the UAB volleyball team winning a pair of matches over the weekend.
UAB closed out the home portion of its schedule, defeating both East Carolina and Marshall in straight sets. Fairbanks and Serley excelled on the court as the Blazers finished 10-1 at home, the best in Conference USA.
Fairbanks patrolled the back row for the Blazers all weekend, corralling 43 digs for a 7.17 digs per set average. In Sunday’s match vs. the Thundering Herd, Fairbanks totaled 25 digs, which featured 21 in the first two stanzas of a 3-0 sweep. In addition, Fairbanks averaged 1.17 assists and 0.50 service aces per set for the weekend. It marks the second defensive player of the week award for Fairbanks over the last three weeks.
Serley hit an impressive .633 in six sets of game action, connecting for 21 kill on 30 swings with only two errors committed. Her weekend total pushed her season hitting percentage in league play over .400, to a Conference USA best .406 attacking average. In addition, Serley stonewalled the opposition with 13 blocks, including nine swats against the Thundering Herd on Senior Day. For the weekend, Serley averaged 3.50 kills and 2.17 blocks per set for a total of 4.83 points per set. Serley is just 14 blocks shy of breaking the school record of 547.
