BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The No. 6-seed UAB men's soccer team topped No. 3-seed UCF on Wednesday night, 3-1, to advance to the Conference USA semifinal game on Friday. The Blazers will face No. 2-seed Tulsa at 7:30 p.m. CT at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala.
The two squads last met at West Campus Field on Oct. 16, where the Golden Hurricane came away with a 2-1 win.
For the Blazers, senior forward Kofi Gyawu leads the squad with six goals scored, five assists, 17 points, and 48 shots. Senior defender Mladen Lemez, who was recently tabbed to the All-Conference USA First Team, has also scored six goals through the season, including two game winners.
Tulsa is led by C-USA Freshman of the Year Cristian Mata, who has recorded a team-best 12 goals, 28 points, and 55 shots. Mata has also recorded a conference-best five game winning goals throughout the 2012 campaign.
The winner of Friday night's match will advance to the Conference USA Championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT to face the winner of Friday's early game between No. 1-seed SMU and No. 5-seed Kentucky. The game will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.
