UAB Women's Tennis Falls At Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Samford on Wednesday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Complex as the Bulldogs remained undefeated for the season.
The Blazers (1-4), short-handed because of injury, were forced to default the No. 6 singles match and the No. 3 doubles contest.
Samford (7-0) won a pair of close, 8-6 decisions on the two doubles courts that were played to claim the opening point and then won each of the five singles matches that were contested.
UAB forced three sets at the No. 3 and No. 5 singles matches and played close sets at two other positions. Rachel Daniell (No. 3) won the opening set, 6-4, before Samford's Stephanie N'tcha responded by winning a pair of 6-0 sets. Caroline Faught (No. 5) split two sets with Lindsay Mallory before playing a match teibreaker for the third set, which Mallory won, 10-3.
Isabel Fernandez played a tight match with Samford's No. 2 player, Madelie Janse Van Rensburg, who has yet to lose this spring. Rensburg won 6-4, 7-6 (3). UAB's Menanteau Moolman bounced back from a tough first set to play a highly competitive second set but fell, 6-1, 6-4, to Samford's Rebecca Kirven at the No. 4 position.
Samford also won at the top singles spot as Kristin Lewis downed Paula Alvarez by scores of 6-1, 6-3.
Wednesday's match was the first of three this week for UAB, which will host North Alabama on campus Saturday at Noon. The Blazers will then be back at the Samford Tennis Center on Saturday for a 10 a.m. match with UTSA.
