BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team won all three doubles contests and dominated the middle of the singles lineup Saturday on its way to a 5-2 victory over North Alabama at the UAB Tennis Courts.
The Blazers (2-4) won at every spot from No. 2 through No. 5 singles in straight sets against the Lions (1-3) and lost just 13 total games at those positions.
UAB's Isabel Fernandez was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Mackenzie Bishop at No. 2 singles, and Rachel Daniell posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Bruna Vieira at the No. 3 spot. Both Fernandez and Daniell improved their records to 4-2 in singles action this spring.
Menanteau Moolman's 6-3, 6-1 win over Natalia Barragan at No. 4 and Caroline Faught's 6-0, 6-2 victory over Teresa Franco at No. 5 gave the Blazers their four singles match wins.
North Alabama picked up its points at No. 1 and No. 6 singles. Victoria Rees defeated UAB's Paula Alvarez at the top spot, while Madison Patey defeated Rachel Cohen at No. 6, taking the first set 6-3 before an injured Cohen retired in the second.
The Blazers took each of the doubles matches to start the day with the doubles teams of Alvarez and Fernandez, Daniell and Moolman, and Cohen and Faught each recording victories.
UAB is back in action again Sunday. The Blazers will play at the Samford Tennis Complex against UTSA with 10 a.m. start time.
