BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team posted its second victory of the weekend Sunday with a 5-2 win over UTSA at the Samford Tennis Complex.
The Blazers (3-4) won in similar fashion to Saturday's victory over North Alabama, taking the doubles point and controlling the middle part of the singles lineup.
UAB pulled out three-set matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles Sunday. Rachel Daniell (No. 3) took down Micaela Silva, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, while Menanteau Moolman (No. 4) shook off a first-set loss for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Kavya Menon.
Paula Alvarez and Caroline Faught accounted for UAB's two other singles points with straight-set wins. Alvarez downed Isabelle Jonsson, 6-0, 7-6, at No. 2 singles, and Faught defeated Natalie Hand, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 position.
UTSA (5-3) picked up its points at the top and bottom of the singles order. The Roadrunners' Stefanie Peana defeated Isabel Fernandez, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, while Irene Gonzalez claimed victory at the No. 6 spot when UAB's Rachel Cohen was forced to retire because of injury.
UAB had a point in hand entering singles play for the second straight day because of its performance on the doubles courts. Alvarez and Fernandez teamed for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, while Daniell and Moolman were 8-3 winners at the No. 2 position to secure the match's opening point.
The Blazers will now hit the road for their first matches outside of Birmingham when they travel East for three matches in three days nest weekend. UAB will play at Presbyterian on Friday, Gardner-Webb on Saturday and Wofford on Sunday.
