MOBILE, Ala. - UAB sophomore Caitlin Watts finished the first day of the South Alabama Women's Invitational in first place as an individual with a one-round stroke count of 73 (1-over par).
The tournament began Monday at the Azalea City Golf Club in Mobile, Ala. after a two-and-a-half hour thunderstorm delay. UAB is in seventh place after day one with a score of 314 as a team, but the Blazers are just 10 shots off the lead. The tournament host, South Alabama, finished round one in first place with a team score of 304.
UAB junior Jaime Ritter and freshman Holly Robinson finished the first 18 holes tied for 30th place, with a score of 80. Junior Ana Martin ended day one with a stroke count of 81, and freshman Margaret Yeh rounded out the scoring for the Blazers with a one-round score of 83.
"We did well overall, especially since it is the first event of the semester and we had a two-and-a-half hour delay due to the thunderstorm," UAB coach Kim Wilcox said. "We are looking forward to tomorrow. Caitlin (Watts) is quite capable of winning this event."
Monday's action was originally scheduled to include 36 holes before the delay. The tournament will now be a 36-hole event instead of 54 holes, with the final 18 to be played Tuesday.
