Men's Golf Improves To Fourth At C-USA Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. -- The UAB men's golf team improved one spot during Monday's second round of the 2012 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship. The Blazers will enter the final round in fourth place overall with a team score of three-over par 583 (292-291).
UAB, along with the rest of the field, will be chasing clubouse leader No. 40 Memphis, which is lookiing to capture its first C-USA championship. The Tigers (571) are clinging to a three-stroke lead over No. 23 UCF (574) heading into the final round of championship play. East Carolina (582), ranked 33rd in the country, is one stroke ahead of the Blazers, while No. 42 SMU (584) rounds out the top five.
Freshman Paul Dunne (75-71) and sophomore Thomas Sutton (70-76) lead the Blazers through 36 holes, as both golfers are in a tie for 12th overall with a two-over par 146. Dunne's one-under par 71 during second-round play was the low round by any UAB golfer on Monday.
Senior Jason Shufflebotham is in a tie for 18th overall with a three-over par 147 (73-74), while sophomore Sam Love is in a tie for 22nd overall with a 148 (74-74).
Junior Hunter Hawkins made the biggest improvement from the first to second round by a UAB golfer, improving from Sunday's opening round 77 to an even par 72 during Monday's second round. He is in a tie for 25th coming into the final round with a 149.
Greg Eason of UCF and Roman Robledo of Houston lead all individuals, both checking in with a five-under par 138 through 36 holes.
This year's event features six of the 11 teams ranked among the top 50 in the country. Tulsa, the other ranked team in the event at No. 48 in the country, is in ninth with a 597.
The winner of the event will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
Championship play will conclude on Tuesday with the Blazers teeing off on hole No. 1 at 8 a.m. CT. UAB will be paired with Houston and SMU during the third round. Live scoring of this year's C-USA Men's Golf Championship can be found by logging onto Golfstat.com.
