BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The No. 13 UAB men's soccer team will hit the road for Tulsa, its sixth Conference USA match of 2013, on Saturday, Oct. 19. UAB and Tulsa are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
For the second straight match, the Blazers will encounter one of the top offenses in the nation. In the most recent NCAA statisical rankings Tulsa owns the 19th-ranked attack in the country (2.00 goals per game). UAB held FIU, the 16th-ranked offense in Division I men's soccer, score­less in its last match.
Blazers Shutout FIU For Fifth Clean Sheet of 2013
In its most recent match, the UAB men's soccer team recorded a 1-0 victory against Conference USA foe FIU on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at West Campus Field. With the win, UAB head coach Mike Getman collected his 90th Conference USA victory in his coaching career, the top mark in conference history.
The Blazers shut down the potent FIU attack, which ranked 16th in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 2.09 goals per game. Senior goalkeeper Raphael Ville collected his fourth clean sheet of 2013, behind five saves. That matched the most he has saved in a single game this season.
Out of the halftime break, UAB pushed ahead and scored the eventual game-winner. Sopho­more forward Freddy Ruiz chipped a ball to streaking redshirt junior midfielder Alex Clay. Clay collected the pass and placed it in the upper right corner to secure the 1-0 win for the host Blazers in the 48th minute.
About Tulsa
Tulsa enters Saturday night's match with an overall record of 7-4-1 and 2-2-0 conference mark. The preseason Conference USA favorite, the Golden Hurricane is currently in fifth place in the 10-team league. In the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll, Tulsa received seven votes, as well.
In their latest outing, Tulsa recorded a 3-2 overtime victory against Conference USA foe Char­lotte. Brothers Christian and Omar Mata each contributed a goal in the Golden Hurricane's seventh victory of 2013.
Sophomore forward Christian Mata leads the conference in scoring this season. Mata has tallied 22 points on eight goals and six assists. Freshman goalkeeper Jake McGuire has started the last seven matches in net for the Golden Hurricane. McGuire holds a 1.39 goals allowed average.
Tulsa owns a 10-2-1 edge in the all-time series against UAB. Last season, the Golden Hurricane defeated the Blazers twice, once in the regular season and in the Conference USA Tournament semifinals.
