CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. ----- Jessica Rouillard fired an even-par 72 in the opening round of the UC Spring Invitational to put her in a tie for second place. As a team, the Blazers are in ninth place with a score of 311.
Rouillard made five birdies en route to a first round score of even-par 72. Her five birdies were tied for the most by an individual in the opening round. She is tied for second and two-strokes behind Florida Southern’s Megan Kelley, who began the tournament with a two-under par 70.
“Jessica did great,” said UAB Head Coach Kim Wilcox. “She didn’t play well at Hattiesburg but she’s a hard worker and focused and that paid off today.”
Caitlin Watts also got off to a solid start to the tournament with a score of four-over par 76. She is currently tied for 16th place.
Lindsey Gipson shot an eight-over par 80 in the first round while Jaime Ritter and Holly Robinson each carded rounds of 83 to round out the scoring for UAB.
“It was nice to play in warmer weather compared to the cold and rain that we’ve been playing in so far,” added Wilcox. “We had a good practice session after today’s round and are looking forward to getting back on the course tomorrow and seeing if we can move up the leaderboard.”
UAB sits in ninth place as a team after an opening round 311. The Blazers trail tournament-leading Bradley University (302) by nine strokes. Florida Southern and Cincinnati round out the top three with scores of 303 and 304, respectively.
Kelley leads the individual standings at two-under par. Six players, including UAB’s Rouillard, are tied for second place after rounds of even-par 72.
The second round of the tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET on Saturday.
