UAB Sand Volleyball Falls To Stetson, 3-2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two three-set wins in the second and third flights lifted Stetson over the UAB sand volleyball team, 3-2, on the final day of the Jacksonville Easter Tournament Saturday.
The Blazers move to 8-5 overall on the season and return home for three duals this week, hosting ULM on Thursday at 4 p.m. CT. UAB then entertains North Florida on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT and again Sunday at Noon CT.
Against Stetson, the Blazers were plagued by two tight contests at the second and third courts. UAB’s Sam Serley and Alison Woods fell to Catherine Coston and Alisha Hoffman, 21-16, 18-21, 16-14, in the third flight, before Stetson’s Savannah Byl and Maren Rygh took down UAB’s Ally Slaughter and Kirsten Gallagher, 22-20, 18-21, 15-12 at the second spot.
The Blazers started Saturday’s dual with a split in the fourth and fifth flights. At No. 5, Becca Howard took a 21-14, 21-15 defeat, before Sara Rishell and Rachel Fairbanks rebounded for a 12-21, 21-15, 15-13 triumph at the fourth court.
Tied 1-1, UAB fell at two of the final three courts to take a 3-2 loss to Stetson. The Blazers’ lone victory on the final positions came at flight No. 1, where Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas ousted Kaley Melville and Julie Bassett, 22-20, 21-16.
UAB now returns to Birmingham for its final three home contests this week, before heading to the Florida State Tournament on April 20-21.
