Seniors Lead Women's Tennis Over UTEP, 4-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior Menanteau Moolman delivered a match-clinching three-set win to lift the UAB women’s tennis team to a 4-3 victory over UTEP on Senior Day at George Ward Park on Sunday.
The Blazers are now 12-6 overall and 2-1 in Conference USA action on the year and own an 11-2 mark at home. UTEP falls to 11-11 overall and 1-2 in C-USA play.
Overall, UAB’s seniors went 3-1 on the day with a 6-0, 6-4 triumph from Isabel Fernandez at the No. 1 position and an 8-2 win from Fernandez and teammate Elaine Simon at the No. 3 doubles court. Meanwhile, Moolman defeated Matilda Tench, 6-1, 0-6, 6-4, to give the Blazers the win.
“I am so happy for the seniors to finish their last home match in that fashion,” head coach Lisa Jackson said. “I am so proud of how our whole team kept its composure under pressure today.”
The Blazers started Sunday with a win from Fernandez and Simon in doubles followed by an 8-6 victory from UAB’s Sarah Witkowski and Caroline Faught to give the Blazers a 1-0 advantage.
UTEP then evened the score as the two teams went to the singles courts when the Miners’ Anastasiya Sylenko defeated Simon , 6-3, 6-3, at the sixth court.
The Blazers quickly rebounded with two-straight wins at the top positions. Following a victory from Fernandez, Rachel Daniell ousted Martina Trierweiler, 6-1, 6-2, to give UAB the 3-1 lead.
Moolman then clinched the match for the Blazers with a win at the fourth court, before UTEP picked up victories at the third and fourth positions.
UAB now travels to South Alabama to take on the Jaguars at 11 a.m. CT on April 13.
