UAB Bowling Fourth After Day One

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The UAB bowling team won three matches to sit in fourth place on the first day of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational.
The Blazers had a total pinfall of 4,680 through five matches on Friday. UAB lost its first two 5x5 Baker matches but bounced back to win its last three on the day and is only behind top-20 ranked teams on the leaderboard.
"I was so excited with the results from today," said head coach Michelle Crews. "It was a great way to start the season."
It was a tough draw as UAB had to face two of the top-10 teams in its first two matches. The Blazers were paired with No. 4 Vanderbilt to begin the day. The Commodores won the first match, 1,073 to the Blazers' 899.
In the second match, UAB fell to No. 9 Stephen F. Austin, 1,008-862. The Blazers refocused to take the win over Louisiana Tech, 1,042-873 in the third match.
The success continued into the fourth match, with UAB edging Jackson State, 948-930 to be even on the day heading into its final match. The Blazers were paired with Texas Southern and took the win, 929-846.
The teams will return tomorrow for the traditional games beginning at 8:55 a.m.. UAB is slated to play Alabama State, Florida A&M, Southern and Bethune-Cookman.
