Blazers Remain Fourth At Allstate Sugar Bowl Invite

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The UAB bowling team won two of its four games on Saturday to remain in fourth place at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational. The Blazers will have a chance to compete for the championship on Sunday.
UAB is now 5-4 on the tournament with a total pinfall of 9,459 to average 189.2 per game. The Blazers were 2-2 on the second day, with its two losses decided by just 48 pins.
In the first traditional game, UAB defeated Alabama State 978-950 to start 1-0. The Blazers had a bye in the next round, but totaled a 1,052 among the individuals competing.
UAB then fell in a close game to Florida A&M, 875-831, but rebounded for a 983-846 win over Southern in the fourth game. The closest game of the day came against Bethune-Cookman, with the Blazers just falling by three pins, 938-935.
Individually, senior Leah Walker led UAB with a seventh-place finish. Walker bowled a 1,040 total to average 208.40 per game in five games. Freshmen Amy Quick and Jessica Mellott both earned top-20 finishes. Quick was 11th with an 818 (204.5) pinfall in four games, while Mellott took 19th with a 979 (195.8) across five games.
Senior Ali Long finshed 25th with a 945 (189.0) total on the day. Freshman Shana Taulbee was 54th, senior Jennafer Mellott finished 60th and sophomore Lauren Douglas was 61st.
The final round will be the Best of Seven Baker matches on Sunday. The Blazers are paired with Vanderbilt in the Championship Bracket. The action will begin at 8:55 a.m. CT.
