UAB Bowling Moves Into First Heading Into Final Day

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Senior Jennafer Mellott was the top individual finisher and all five Blazers finished in the top 12 to move the UAB bowling team into first place after the second day of competition at the Hornet Classic.
UAB (15-8) is now 8-2 through the first two rounds of the tournament, including a 5-0 finish in the traditional matches on Saturday. The Blazers own a total pinfall of 9383, with Tulane just behind in second with a 9330.
Mellott led all bowlers with a career-high 218.4 average in five games played. She had a career-best 247 in the fourth game of the day and bowled three games over 200 to finish in first place.
All five of UAB's individuals finished among the top 12. Sophomore Madeleine McDuff took fourth after posting a 193.4 average, which included her highest score as a Blazer with a 226 in the second game.
Freshman Shana Taulbee earned her second-straight top 15 finish after averaging 187.4 on the day. She bowled two games over 200, including a high of 232 in the third game.
Fellow freshman Jessica Mellott took 10th with a 182.8 average and senior Leah Walker finished 12th posting a 181.2 average.
As a team, the Blazers started the day with a win over Southern, 947-796. UAB then defeated Jackson State, 1020-848 to improve to 2-0 on the day heading into a match against tournament host and No. 18 Alabama State.
The Blazers defeated the Hornets, 959-858 to remain undefeated on the day with two matches remaining. UAB then took down Louisiana Tech, 966-850 and finished the day undefeated with a win in the final match.
UAB will have a chance to play for the championship tomorrow with the bracket style best 4-of-7 baker matches. The Blazers will take on Tulane to start the day, which is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. CT.
