MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The UAB bowling team won its first match but lost in the championship to finish second at the Hornet Classic in Montgomery, Ala.
UAB (17-9) finished the three-day tournament with 10 wins in 13 matches. The Blazers averaged a 182.48 in the baker matches and a 192.64 in its five wins in the traditional matches.
In the first match of the Best 4-of-7 bracket matches on Sunday, UAB defeated Tulane, 4-2, to advance straight to the championship match. The team earned wins in the first three games, and then Tulane countered with wins in the fourth and fifth game to pull within one.
The Blazers secured the win with a 213-165 win in the sixth game. Tulane went on to win its next match to set up a rematch in the championship. It was a tight match that came down to the seventh and final game to decide the winner.
Tulane won three of the first four games, which meant UAB would have to win the next two to send the match to a tie-breaking seventh game. The Blazers did so with a 222-155 win in the fifth and edging out a 159-155 win in the sixth game, but Tulane was able to win the seventh game to finish in first place.
Senior Jennafer Mellott and sophomore Madeleine McDuff both earned Hornet Classic All-Tournament honors. Mellott finished first individually and McDuff was fourth.
UAB will compete in its final tournament of the fall at the Kat Klash in Houston, Texas from Nov. 21-23.
