BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After the regular season concluded Saturday night, the seven-team field for the 2014 Conference USA Men's Soccer Championship has been set. The No. 22 UAB men's soccer team earned the third seed for the second-straight year and will face sixth-seeded Marshall Wednesday afternoon in the quarterfinals.
The Blazers finished the regular season with 15 points in league play at 5-3-0 in conference action to finish third in the C-USA standings for the second-straight season.
UAB is seeking its second C-USA tournament title in program history, after winning the league championship back in 1999.
The race for the regular season title was highly contested all year, with Charlotte claiming the title with 19 points. The 49ers (No. 5) are one of four teams in C-USA ranked in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25. Charlotte garners the only bye of the championship, advancing directly to the semifinals on Friday.
No. 13 Kentucky finished 5-1-2 in league play and earned the No. 2 seed with 17 points. Old Dominion, No. 25 New Mexico, Marshall and South Carolina complete the tournament field, respectively.
Junior forward Freddy Ruiz finished the regular season with 10 goals, which tops all C-USA players. UAB averages 2.00 goals per game, which ranks top 20 in the NCAA in scoring offense.
UAB and the Marshall Thundering Herd are set to battle at 3:30 p.m. CT in the second quarterfinal game on Wednesday in Norfolk, Va. The Blazers defeated Marshall, 7-2, on Oct. 18 at West Campus Field.
