BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Redshirt sophomore Hunter Weber of the UAB men's soccer team has been named one of the 14 honorees for the 2014 Fall Conference USA Spirit of Service award, the league announced Wednesday.
The Little Rock, Ark. native is the first UAB men's soccer player to earn the award since Tucker Stone earned the honors in 2010. Dean Sorrell was also an honoree in 2008.
Weber is the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative for the squad and led the 17th Annual "Soccer For A Cure" Initiative at Children's of Alabama Hospital this past September. With the annual event, Weber visited with young cancer patients and shared gifts and stories from his experiences on the field.
He is also active at a child development center as well as the reading mentors program through Better Basics at Glen Iris Elementary. He is a two-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree and has earned Athletic Director Academic Honor Roll distinction in each of his semesters at UAB.
Weber is part of a squad that has been ranked nationally dating back to the preseason poll in 2013, and was also a member of this year's squad that earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
