BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team moved to 2-0 in Conference USA play for the first time since 2006 after defeating UTEP, 2-0, at West Campus Field on Sept. 28. Sophomore midfielder Morgan Key-Adams netted the Blazers' two goals.
"We had 15 shots tonight and the girls are more confident," said head coach Harold Warren. "After our last lost, we had a team talk and the girls are done losing. We are a better team than our first seven games and know that we should be wining games. We changed our training and mentality and it has paid off. Since then, we have three wins, three shutouts and 14 goals."
After her first attempt was blocked by the Miners' (7-4-1, 1-1-0 C-USA) Sarah Dilling, Key-Adams wasted no time in putting UAB (5-5-0, 2-0-0 C-USA) ahead after capitalizing on her own rebound. The goal was the quickest score for the Blazers this season.
Key-Adams tallied a second goal just 13 seconds out of halftime. She made a run down field after intercepting the ball and let a shot rip from 20-yards out that beat Dilling once again. The goal was her third of the season and fourth of her career.
Today's game was the third consecutive game a UAB player has scored multiple times. Senior Johanna Liney has recorded two goals in two of the past three matches, while sophomore forward Kimberly Fincher and Key-Adams have each scored two goals in one contest.
Junior goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez has kept a clean sheet in three straight matches, brining her season total to four shutouts. Jimenez made seven saves against UTEP. The Blazers' backline played a major role in the shutout, blocking nine of the Miners' 18 shots. UAB has now played more than 276 minutes without allowing a goal. UAB is outscoring its opponents 14-0 in the past three outings.
Over the past four games, the Blazers have netted the game's first goal and are 3-1 in that stretch.
UAB heads on the road for the first time in conference play next week, taking on Southern Miss on Friday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m. and then traveling to Louisiana Tech on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m.
