Volleyball Clashes With Samford In Mid-Week Match

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team is set to play cross-town rival Samford at the Pete Hanna Center in a mid-week match on Tuesday, Sept. 30. The Blazers and Bulldogs are slated to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
UAB (4-12, 1-1 C-USA) is coming off a 3-0 sweep of Louisiana Tech for its first win in Conference USA play. The Blazers hit a season-high .389 attack percentage with 47 kills and just eight errors. Senior Bethanie Thomas led the team with 11 kills and notched her third double-double of the season with 12 digs.

Series History
This will be the 29th meeting between the two schools. UAB holds a 26-2 advantage in the long history. The Blazers won the most recent meeting in 2013. The two teams met on Sept. 4, 2013 in Bartow Arena, with UAB taking a 3-0 win.
Scouting the Opposition
Samford (6-7, 1-0 SoCON) enters the match after a 3-1 win over Chattanooga. The Bulldogs have won the their last two matches and three of the last four entering Tuesday’s matchup. Michaela Reesor leads the team with 160 kills, averaging 3.48 kills per set. Setter Erika Pifer is dishing out an average of 10.02 assists per match for the Bulldogs.
UAB Among Conference USA
Senior Sara Rishell has been extremely efficient on offense, leading the Blazers with a .331 hitting percentage this season. Her percentage ranks eighth in the conference. She most recently led UAB with a .692 clip in the win over Louisiana Tech.
As a team, UAB ranks top in the league in opponent’s blocks per set. The Blazers are allowing opponents just 1.74 blocks per set on the season.
