BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB men's soccer senior forwards Ian Svantesson and Freddy Ruiz were named All-Conference USA, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Svantesson started all 16 games in 2015 and earned a spot on the first team after leading UAB and ranking fifth in Conference USA with 18 points. The Orlando, Fla., native paced the Blazers and stood fourth in the league with eight goals to go along with two assists. In addition, Svantesson was tied for fifth in the conference with three game-winning goals.
Svantesson was also named to the All-Conference USA third team in 2014 and the C-USA All-Freshman Team in 2012.
Ruiz also drew starts in all 16 games and received second team honors to mark the third consecutive year in which he was recognized with a postseason award. Ruiz finished the season second on the team and tied for sixth in Conference USA with 14 points, registering 46 shots to rank fourth in the league. The Fort Payne, Ala., product was also tied for seventh in the conference with five goals and ended the year with four assists.
"I am pleased to see that Ian and Freddy were recognized by the league for the contributions they made to our team this season," head coach Mike Getman said. "Game after game they have proven to be two of the best players in the league. I am confident they will both continue playing at the next level."
