BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -Sylvester Toe of Douglasville, Georgia will join the UAB baseball team for the 2017 season, head coach Brian Shoop announced Wednesday.
"We are thrilled to announce Sylvester Toe as our first signee of the 2017 recruiting class, said UAB head coach Brian Shoop. "It is always exciting when a former player (Tanner Bryant) calls and has a "match" for our program, since they know exactly what it is like to play here and exactly what we are looking for. We quickly responded to Tanner's phone call with a trip to see Sylvester play. As the recruiting process moved on and we got to know Sylvester, we also felt he would not only be a great college player, but exactly the type of young man we want in our program."
Toe was named to the 2015 17U PG Evoshield Classic All-Tournament Team. He also was selected to the 2015 PG WWBA 18U 2015 Grads All-Tournament Team and was the 2014 Most Valuable Player of the Landmark Christian School team. He was also recently recognized as a member of the 2015 Preseason High School Underclass All American High Honorable Mention Team.
"We have a strong history of 2-way players (including Tanner Bryant) and we certainly see Sylvester in that light," added Shoop. "He has a power arm who we believe will pitch at a high level in C-USA and has also had a strong high school career as an outfielder and right hand hitter."
In his junior season, Toe hit .485 for Landmark Christian in 22 game appearances for the War Eagles. On the mound he tallied 40.1 innings with a 2.68 ERA and 50 strikeouts.
For the East Cobb Patriots, Toe was equally impressive hitting .421 in 38 games with 13 extra-base hits. In 10 games pitching for East Cobb he threw 36.1 innings with a staggering 1.15 ERA.
Off the field, Toe is thriving in the classroom and as a leader in the community. He is a four-time National Society of High School Scholars member and has been part of the Church of Chapel Hill Greeter's Ministry and MLK Jr. Holiday Day of Service throughout his high school career. His other activities off the diamond include the Leadership Academy and the Key Club.
"Landmark Christian has a rich tradition of producing successful players and we are thankful to Coach Jason Godbee for his development of Sylvester," said Shoop. "We are also grateful to Jim Lovejoy and the East Cobb Patriots for providing Sylvester such a great summer baseball experience of playing against some of the best players in the country. We are also excited that Sylvester is such a good student committed to earning his degree at UAB."
