Kayla Wilbourn Wins UAB Fall Beach Blast

GULF SHORES, Ala. - UAB sophomore Kayla Wilbourn claimed the 2015 UAB Fall Beach Blast on Tuesday with a two-round 141 (-3). The tournament, hosted by the Blazers, was played at the par-72 Cypress-Marsh Course at Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club.
The Cairo, Ga., native was tied heading into the final round after firing a 69 (-3) in the opening round of the event. Wilbourn pulled away from the field on the back nine to take home medalist honors by three strokes over three players at even-par. Tuesday's victory by Wilbourn is her first individual collegiate victory, and the first individual tournament win by a Blazer since Caitlyn Watts won the 2012 Belmont Invitational. Wilbourn is also the second UAB player to win the Fall Beach Blast since Carolyn Cochran did so in the 2009 edition of the tournament.
"Kayla did a great job and handled being tied for the lead like a champ," said UAB head coach Kim Wilcox. "We are all so proud of her."
As a team UAB completed its fall slate on Tuesday with an 11-over 299 to finish in a tie for fifth place with South Dakota.
The Blazers wrapped up the 36-hole event with a 25-over tally of 601, putting them five shots behind Tennessee Tech and Western Kentucky. Southern Miss earned the team title by two strokes over McNeese State with 17-over 593.
Juliana Sebastian carded an even-par 72 to vault into the top-25, her best finish of the season. Sydney Snodgrass turned in a 4-over 76 to end her impressive fall season in a tie for 33rd.
Rebecca Chandler finished in a tie for 39th with a two-day total of 13-over 157. Imy Huxley salvaged a 79 on Tuesday to finish in 45th place.
