BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - An eighth-inning home run lifted Ohio State past the UAB baseball team, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Regions Field.
"It was a good series and a good game," head coach Brian Shoop said. "You'd like to get more than three runs on 12 hits, so we certainly had our opportunities and just weren't able to punch anymore across."
UAB (8-2) tied the game at 3-3 headed to the eighth, before Ohio State's (5-4) Troy Kuhn lifted a ball that hit the foul pole in left, giving the Buckeyes the game-winning home run and 4-3 lead that would hold to salvage one game in the three-game set.
"It's a game of inches," Shoop said. "The game-winning two-out home run hit the outside of the foul pole. It's inches from a foul ball and ends up being a home run in a game now in college baseball where there aren't many home runs. Good series and two quality teams. I think if you were a fan, you'd enjoy being at these three games."
Ohio State went into the seventh down 2-1 and scored twice after three Blazer pitching changes to regain the advantage, 3-2. But, UAB fought back and tied it back up at 3-3 in the bottom half off a Tyler Mims single to score Adam Smith.
Junior reliever Stephen Baggett was charged with the loss, and Ohio State's Trace Dempsey got the win in relief.
Esteban Tresgallo had a career day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base. Evan Peterson added two RBI off a single in the first to finish with two hits, while Chase Davis and Mims also added two hits each.
UAB returns to action Tuesday with a 6 p.m. contest at Samford.
