UAB Wins One At Southeast Sand Slam Friday

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The UAB sand volleyball team split action in two dual meets on Friday at the Southeast Sand Slam.
UAB (6-8) opened the day with a 3-2 win over College of Charleston but was edged by tournament-host and No. 7 ranked Georgia State, 3-2. The teams also began the pairs tournament with the gold bracket on Friday that will continue on Saturday.
Seniors Rachel Fairbanks and Sara Rishell picked up wins in both matches for UAB. The duo took the win, 21-18, 21-19, against College of Charleston. Freshmen Anna-Mae Messisco and Gabbi Moreno picked up a three-set win to top the Cougars, 21-19, 11-21, 15-8.
Rounding out the win for UAB was senior Becca Howard and freshman Avei Logoleo. The pair won 22-20, 22-20, to extend their win streak to five-straight matches.
Against Georgia State, seniors Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas had to come from behind to win at the No. 1 position. After falling the first set, they fought back to win 22-20, 15-8 to come away with the victory.
Fairbanks and Rishell also won in three sets. They opened with a 21-19 win in the first set, but fell 23-21 in the second to send it to a third set. The pair won 16-14 to finish with two wins on the day. They continued their success into the Gold Bracket Pairs Tournament with a win in the first round.
The second round of the pairs tournament will begin on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. ET.
