Hirini and Thomas Win One At AVCA Nationals

GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Seniors Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas picked up a win on Friday in two matches at the 2015 AVCA Pairs Nationals in Gulf Shores, Ala.
UAB's pair won their third match at the national pairs championship. Hirini and Thomas topped LSU's Orellana and Lindelow in an exciting three-set match. The Blazers won the first set, 21-19, to take the early lead.
LSU came back to win the second set, 11-21, but UAB took the win with a 15-12 victory in the third. Thomas had 15 kills while Hirini added seven and three blocks.
The win came after Hirini and Thomas fell in the first match of the day to ULM's Araya and McNamee in another three-set match. UAB was down early after a 21-11 loss in the first set, but came back to tie the match up at 1-1 with a 21-17 win in the second set. However, the pair fell in the third set 15-11.
Pool play will continue tomorrow as the Blazers look to advance to the pairs championship bracket on Sunday.
