SOUTH BEND, Ind. - No. 18 Indiana tallied a penalty kick in the 54th minute in what would be the game winner, topping the UAB men's soccer team, 2-1, Friday afternoon in the first match of the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament.
"I'm disappointed by the result," head coach Mike Getman said. "We fought hard and played well. The breaks seem to be going against us with another tough penalty call. We will keep working hard and get ready for a great Irish team on Sunday."
The Blazers (1-2-0) capitalized early to take a 1-0 lead just after first kick, but a Hoosier goal in the seventh minute, and the PK early in the second half, proved to be the difference.
Senior forward Karl Chester scored his first goal of the season at the 4:05 mark after stealing an errant Indiana pass. Matt Foldesy evened the tally at 1-1 three minutes later in what would be the halftime score.
The Hoosiers totaled 25 shots for nine on goal, while the Green and Gold racked up eight shots. Chester, Freddy Ruiz and Ian Svantesson all finished with a shot on target. In goal, Joe Kuzminsky posted seven saves in the match.
UAB returns to the pitch Sunday at 1 p.m. versus tournament host No. 5 Notre Dame at Alumni Stadium.
