CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UAB men’s soccer team lost on the road No. 9 Charlotte on Saturday evening 5-0. The Blazers record is now at 6-6-3 overall and 2-3-1 in Conference USA while the 49ers improve to 9-2-1 and 4-1 in conference.
"This was our worst performance of the year," said UAB head coach Mike Getman. "Give Charlotte credit, they were very good, but all of their goals came off of our mistakes. We could have moved into first place with a win, but we gave it away. We have some work to do."
UAB trailed 2-0 at halftime with the first goal for Charlotte and Brandt Bronico coming eight minutes into the contest. A free kick for a handball just outside the box was originally blocked but Bronico drilled the rebound into the lower left corner.
Bronico’s other two goals both came on penalty kicks less than four minutes apart. Both calls to set-up the PK’s were questionable calls but Bronico made the most of each to extend the score to 4-0.
The last goal occurred in the 79th minute for the 49ers. UAB back-up goalkeeper Julian Mehl and had recently entered in place of Joe Kuzminsky and misplayed a ball which led to a goal for Cha Sunol-Rojas.
The Blazers finished with seven shots, four of which were on goal, while Charlotte had 10 shots in total and seven on target.
UAB wraps up its home slate with a contest against New Mexico on Wednesday night. The Blazers and Lobos are set to begin at 7:00 PM and will celebrate Senior Night before the start of the match.
